All our products are made from top quality materials and components. However, as with any natural material, the correct care is necessary for the looks and longevity of the leather to be maintained. Bridle leather is very tough and will survive hard use and neglect but will last better, look better and perform better with care. Above all feeding the leather with our Sedgwicks Leather Feed will be very beneficial for all of our products We have a seperate guide for the cleaning of brass and nickle fittings here Initial TreatmentWhen you receive your order it will have some of the wax that was applied to the grain side as protection during tanning still present. This is the white substance you can see. This will either wear away with use, or can be removed with a cloth if desired, or when you treat your new item as described below. You new item of leather work can be treated throughout its life just as any other item of quality saddlery. All of our leatherwork is made using either Sedgwick or Bakers leather so we recommend and use only Sedgwick Leather Feed as it is specifically formulated for this type of leather. When your item is new simply work some of the feed into both the flesh and grain side with your fingers, and polish off with a clean lint free cloth when dry, typically in 2 - 4 hours. Ongoing MaintenanceYour item should be cleaned with a damp cloth if necessary and a coat of feed applied either whenever the leather starts to look dry, has been exposed to inclement weather or a damp environment or you simply wish to make the item look smart. If your leatherwork has got very wet it should be allowed to dry at room temperature and never hung in front of a fire or radiator. Once the item has dried out a dressing of Sedgwick Leather Feed may be applied to rejuvenate the item. Apply using your hands as the warmth will help the oil penetrate the fibres. Rolled Collars Rolled collars in particular need care, especially if they have become very wet. They should be allowed to be dry naturally (on the dog is fine if the dog is dry!) and then given a rub over with Sedgwick Leather Feed to help preserve the structure and appearance of the collar. The grain and colour will be permanently damaged if the leather is allowed to become very dry. Repair or AlterationYour item is constructed in such a way that repair of the leather, replacement of fittings, shortening, or re-stitching is possible, either by ourselves or any competent saddler should you wish. |
